Monica Arnold est née le 24 octobre 1980 à Atlanta où elle a grandi. Monica fait ses débuts en 95 avec son single Don't Take It Personal, qui connaît un énorme succès en devenant platine à peine un mois après sa sortie. Le second titre Before You Walk Out of My Life rencontre la même reconnaissance. L'année 98 va être décisive pour la carrière de Monica. Au printemps, elle enregistre The Boy is Mine avec Brandy, une autre diva du R&B américain. Ce single connaît un succès phénoménal l'été de la même année. Des millions d'exemplaires sont vendus.
