FR : Devenu Abdullah Ibrahim en1968, Adolph Johannes Dollar Brand , né au Cap le 9 octobre 1934 et classé « métis » par les lois de l'apartheid, est le plus célèbre des jazzmen sud-africains et sa musique reflète la complexité identitaire de son pays, tout comme son patronyme peut évoquer le kaléidoscope originel. Il fut exposé très tôt à la diversité culturelle du port maritime de la ville : la musique traditionnelle africaine, les chants Malay du Cap, le carnaval, les succès populaires et les enregistrements de jazz américain sont une part importante de son expérience d'enfant. Ibrahim est considéré comme la figure de proue dans le sous-genre du Cap jazz. Dans le jazz, sa musique reflète notamment l'influence de Thelonious Monk et Duke Ellington. Avec la chanteuse de jazz Sathima Bea Benjamin, sa femme , il est le père du rappeur underground Jean Grae à New York , ainsi que d'un autre fils, Tsakwe.
